SIESTA KEY —

Siesta Key was recently named the best beach in the country, and it’s now caught the eye of MTV.

MTV is shooting a new TV series on Siesta Key similar to the 2006 show The Hills, the network said.

Residents in the area had mixed reactions to MTV putting Siesta Key in the spotlight.

“It’s about time,” said Phil Solorzano, owner of Solorzano’s Pizzeria. “I moved here about 12 years ago, and I thought MTV was going to come here sooner than this.”

Beachgoer Jim Surrusco said, “Past MTV shows don’t show a good light on many of the locations they’re at, because of the activities the kids do when they’re on camera.”

However, millions of eyes could also mean a spike in tourism and a boost to businesses during the historically slow summer season.

“So hopefully, this will bring a positive light to it and more tourism to the beaches here in Siesta,” Surrusco said.

Business owners in the area said they’re excited to have their small town featured in the national spotlight.

“It’s interesting. I really didn’t see much evidence of it in the village in town. I didn’t see any cameras, I didn’t see any things happening that were out of the ordinary,” said Martha Smith, owner of The Gallery.

The cast and crew have been filming on Siesta Key since March but have been going unnoticed. Jeanne Corcoran with the film commission said that is how they intended it.

“They’ve been great. They’ve been very, very low key. They’ve been playing by all the rules, going by the book with permits and permissions. They’ve been on private property, they’ve been on public property,” Corcoran said.

MTV is spending hundreds of thousands of dollars in the area, booking up over a thousand hotel rooms for crews during their stay.

“They’ve hired a lot of local people, and they’re using a lot of local businesses like caterers and craft services,” Corcoran said.

The cast and crew are expected to be in the area through July. The eight episode show premieres on July 19.
