The Ringling Bros. and Barnum and Bailey Circus begins its final shows in the Bay area today.

After 146 years, the curtain is coming down on “The Greatest Show on Earth.”

The show will go on for the last time in Tampa at Amalie Arena Wednesday through Sunday. The shows also will be the last ones in Florida.

The show’s performers say they are motivated to give spectators a great show they will never forget before the final shows in Rhode Island in May.

Visitors to the shows can expect the animals (minus the elephants), high-flying stunts and the entertainment of the circus.

At a news conference last week, members of the Feld family that own the circus discussed the closing of what was an American institution. The Feld family bought the Ringling circus in 1967.

“We are sad,” said Kenneth Feld, Chairman and CEO of Feld Entertainment. “It was a very difficult decision to make.”

“It’s so sad to know,” said Wilson, the circus’ first female ringmaster. “All of us, cast and crew, were surprised, we were shocked, we were saddened. This is a show that’s so close to all of our hearts.

“I feel a lot of pressure because there are a 38 ringmasters before me who had a lot more time. I have four months to do it right. We work in show biz and we know the show goes the on so we have four months to put on the most spectacular shows.”
