Florida’s unemployment rate drops to 4.8 percent

  • The bay area has added 42,000 jobs over the year, second only to Orlando among Florida metros.
  • The industries with the largest job gains over the year in Tampa Bay were professional and business services with 14,500 new jobs, and education and health services with 9,100 new jobs.
  • All other industries have been growing except for information, down by 1,300 jobs from a year ago.
  • Feeding off a burst in new jobs, Florida’s unemployment rate dropped from 4.9 percent to an eight-year low of 4.8 percent in April.
  • Education and health services was the best performer, gaining 47,100 jobs year-over-year while leisure and hospitality came in second, adding 45,100 jobs.
