Taken during a vigil on Wednesday night, the Alonso High baseball jersey that mysteriously went missing during a vigil to honor Miami Marlins pitcher Jose Fernandez has been returned to the school.

However, the jersey’s disappearance — and its return — remain a mystery.

Backstory: Jose Hernandez’s Alonso jersey stolen during vigil at school

The jersey went missing from the dugout, where it was on display during the vigil — attended by 500 to 600 people who came out to remember Fernandez, the 24-year-old former Alonso pitcher who died in a boating crash in Miami.

On Thursday night, a family spotted a large envelope leaning up against the high school’s ticket booth with the words “Jose’s jersey” written on it, according to a release from Hillsborough County Public Schools.

The family brought the envelope to the school Friday morning, according to the release, and discovered the jersey was inside.

“The entire Alonso High School family is grateful to have the jersey back and would like to thank the media and the outpouring of social media posts that shared this story,” deputies said.

There was no surveillance footage, but the jersey was believed to have been taken sometime between 7:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m., according to the Sheriff’s Office.
