The inaugural “Grand Prix of the Gulf” kicked off this weekend. More than 100 racers from across the world are competing in the powerboat races that also feature jet skis, sea-doos, and wave runners.

Brandy Lewis brought her family to town from Orlando to watch her husband compete.

“It’s such a family sport,” Lewis said. “Everybody is so friendly, we’re on the water, we love the water.”

The races showcase Bay Area beaches and give adrenaline junkies a spectacular show.

“It’s just a beautiful beach and it’s very welcoming and some of the other places we’ve been it’s a little rougher,” Lewis said.

The races are happening in front of the PostCard Inn on St. Pete Beach. The events continue on Sunday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
