Deputies seek information in attempted kidnapping of Tampa teen

TAMPA, Fla. — Deputies request anyone who might have seen a suspected attempted kidnapping to step forward.

A 16-year-old girl reported she was heading south on Himes Avenue near Flora Street when she was approached by a faded red SUV, according to a Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office news release.

The incident started around 4 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 10.

A man asked her if she wanted a ride, and the Hillsborough High School teenager did not reply. Deputies say the teen reported the suspect then turned down side streets and parked at the intersection of Himes Avenue and Minnehaha Street.

That’s when he got out of his SUV, approached the girl from behind and, while laughing, tried to grab her, according to the release. The girl then ran to a nearby Bank of America location and asked a security guard for help.

The vehicle last was seen heading west on Hillsborough Avenue.

Deputies describe the suspect as a Hispanic male, possibly in his mid 30s with a medium build. He was seen wearing a long sleeve white shirt with paint stains, khaki pants and a tan baseball hat.
