The first teamers weren’t going to play much if at all for this final preseason game and now with the possibility of a wet field, even with the game being pushed up a night to Wednesday, don’t expect to see starters play at all, especially for the Bucs.

Bucs head coach Dirk Koetter has said repeatedly during camp that he knows what his veterans can do, preseason is all about evaluation for players that the staff isn’t sure off.

Wednesday nights game will help make some tough decisions.

“I think people can figure out some of the guys that are in, but we’ve still got competition at multiple positions: wide receiver, tight end, running back, offensive line, corner, safety, defensive line and linebacker,” Koetter said. In other words, the majority of players you’ll see wearing Bucs uni’s against the Skins, might not ever take the field in a regular season contest for the Bucs.

It’ll be pretty much the same thing with the Skins. Washington is coming off a 21-16 win over the Bills, where quarterback Kirk Cousins had a slow start, but eventually got going, throwing for 188 yards and three touchdowns against the Bills backups. Buffalo head coach Rex Ryan sat his entire starting defensive unit.

Redskins head coach Jay Gruden used his starters on both sides, for the entire first half, so again it’ll be 2nd and third team players Wednesday night against the Bucs.

The Bucs defense will see a lot of undrafted Redskins running back Robert Kelly, since starters Matt Jones and Chris Thompson are banged up. Koetter has been pleased with his defensive unit all training camp. He says, it’s the players but also the coaching staff that deserve some praise.

“I said all along, we’ve got better players on defense think people think we do and we added some really good pieces,” Koetter said.  “Then we brought in Mike Smith, who’s been a successful defensive coordinator and a really good staff around him,” Koetter said.
